I recently bought and read the EasyQuit System by Pete Howells to try and help me quit smoking and was blown away by how effective this book was for me.
I had been a smoker for 14 years up until July 22nd 2007 when I finished his book, had one more cigarette as instructed and I haven't even thought about smoking since.
You might think I am jumping the gun here by writing a review only one month after having quit smoking but I can tell you I am not. I know that I am never going to smoke another cigarette in my life and I know that from the very bottom of my heart!
I go out for drinks and meals and still attend parties and functions surrounded by people smoking and it doesn't bother me one bit all thanks to the incredible approach in this book.
This book is amazing for the way that it works. It is quite brilliant the way Pete Howells destroys every possible reason you could have to keep smoking. It has really opened my eyes to how I have been caught up in the foolishness of smoking for all those 14 years.
Pete Howells has a really easy writing style that makes it really easy to get through the book. Despite being 100 pages long, the style is light enough and edgy enough to keep you reading. (The website says it takes as little as 3 hours but I got through it in about 90 minutes!)
He starts out by explaining how every time you have ever tried to quit smoking you have done it using the wrong motivation, namely the bad health effects of smoking. He uses a brilliant analogy for this, explaining that if you were hungry and you were told the food in front of you were poisoned, that information would not stop you being hungry!
His point being that just because you know something is bad for you or you know that you should be doing it doesn't tell you HOW to stop doing it!
He goes on to explain how both the fear of failure and the fear of the rest of your life without cigarettes undermines virtually every attempt you make to quit. It was such an eye-opener for me to read about because after 14 years smoking and probably as many quit attempts, I hadn't realised that one bit!
In the rest of the book he covers off virtually every excuse smokers come up with to keep on smoking and pulls each argument you would use apart. He is brutal in the way it does this but you cannot argue against his logic because they are right! This is the main way that the book works. It breaks smoking down into 30 key 'attitudes' and then destroys your understanding of that aspect of smoking.
By the end of the book, your entire view on cigarettes will have been mauled to pieces! The end result is that you will not have the motivation to want to smoke any more!
If there is any criticism to be had of the book, it is probably that it dwells on some aspects longer than necessary, but being a book, you can always move on to the next chapter once you have understood the point being made in that chapter. Because each chapter deals with one of the 30 aspects of smoking that you need to understand in order to learn how to quit smoking it is easy to move around the book.
The other downfall of the book is that Pete refers to you needing to have an 'epiphany' in order for the system to work. Well, I can say that it worked for me but if you don't have an 'epiphany', you wont quit!
To be fair to Pete though, he does offer 1 to 1 email support so if you have any problems, he will deal with you directly. I wrote to him to thank him for the book because it was such a revelation to me and he wrote me back within the day to say thank you.
I strongly recommend you try this book if you are serious about quitting smoking. It made it so easy for me that after 14 years I walked away from my Marlboros and it hasn't been a problem for me at all. In fact I feel quite annoyed that it took me 14 years of smoking to be able to quit so easily!
